Arc Welding

  • Metal inert gas (MIG) welding. MIG welding involves a welding gun with through-feed filler wire as well as an inert shielding gas to forge clean, strong welds. The shielding gas safeguards the weld area against atmospheric contamination.
  • Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding. TIG welding relies on a non-consumable electrode made of tungsten, shielding gas, and potentially an added filler material to generate welds and prevent contamination.
  • Stick welding, or shielded metal arc welding (SMAW). Stick welding uses a flux-coated consumable electrode. This flux coating generates a slag layer and shielding gas while the electrode melts to form a welded joint.

Resistance Welding

  • Spot welding. This industrial welding method combines electrical current and pressure to melt the material and join sheets of overlapping metal at the desired weld areas.
  • Seam welding. In a process rather like spot welding, seam welding creates continuous welds along seams in overlapping metal materials.
  • Projection welding. The projection welding method applies current and pressure to the intended weld areas and is effective for welding durable joints between metal components and fasteners like studs and nuts.

Gas Welding

  • Oxy-acetylene welding. This welding method uses an oxy-acetylene-generated flame to melt and join metal components. The process is also effective at cutting materials.

Additional Welding Methods

  • Ultrasonic welding. Applicable for thermoplastic materials, this technique uses ultrasonic vibrations at a high frequency to result in a clean, fast bond without needing heat.
  • Laser welding. Ideal for joining thin metals, the laser welding method utilizes a focused beam of light to melt materials and create a precise, lasting bond once they harden.
  • Electron beam welding. Electron beam welding creates deep, strong welds with great accuracy under vacuum conditions with the help of a high-velocity electron beam.
